Phil Smart Sr. has a theory. He believes that each day is divided into three sets of eight hours. There’s eight hours to sleep, there’s eight hours to work, and there’s a “third eight” hours. He figures, “If each one of us will give just a portion of our third eight hours, we’ll change the world.”
While holding a conversation with him in his office one day I learned that he and I share the same birthday and that he is significantly older than me. Wanting to learn from his wisdom, I asked, “What do you think about? What consumes your thoughts?” He leaned closer to me and with compassionate eyes responded, “God, help my eyes not to turn from the pain.” And then he said, “The true measure of a life is not its duration, but its donation.” Tears ran down my cheeks. Later I called and asked for his blessing to take this message around the world. He kindly agreed. Please join the Third 8 Forum and help me start “Third 8” conversations around the world.
